Israeli Citizen's Alleged Role in Iranian Assassination Plot Shocks Authorities

In a shocking turn of events, a 73-year-old Jewish Israeli civilian, Moti Maman, has been arrested and indicted for his alleged involvement in a plot orchestrated by Iran to assassinate high-ranking Israeli officials. According to a joint statement by the Shin Bet and Israel Police, Maman, a resident of Ashkelon, was smuggled into Iran on two separate occasions and received payment for carrying out missions on Tehran's behalf. The investigation revealed that Maman, a businessman with connections in Turkey and Iran, agreed to meet with a wealthy Iranian businessman named Eddy in April. In May, Maman returned to Turkey to meet with Iranian representatives, where he was tasked with "advancing assassination attacks" on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, or Shin Bet head Ronen Bar. The Iranian intelligence officials also explored the possibility of targeting other senior officials, indicating a broader scope for their revenge-driven plans.

Maman's alleged actions have been described as a "very serious affair" by a senior Shin Bet official, who emphasized the significant efforts of Iranian intelligence agencies to recruit Israeli citizens for terror activities. The official warned that Iran is likely to continue its recruitment attempts, particularly targeting Israelis with criminal backgrounds.

Maman's lawyer, Eyal Besserglick, acknowledged his client's "error of judgment" and stated that he has fully cooperated with the authorities. However, the Shin Bet emphasized the severity of Maman's actions, considering them a serious security offense, regardless of the initial motive for contact with Iranian officials.
